Audition Challenge: Voices.com
Lately, I’ve taken part in a challenge wherein I audition for voice over jobs on a pay-to-play voice over website and report my findings with some other voice over artists I know. This challenge is the brainchild of Anthony Pica, who is a very successful voice actor on Fiverr and other platforms. You can learn more about his work by going to www.avosjourney.com
For those of you who may be unfamiliar, Voices.com sends out audition invitations to voice talent on the platform, and invitations are provided only if you are a “match” with the job. So, the amount of auditions I am able to complete on Voices.com is dictated by how many they send my way. We can assume that I’m auditioning for basically everything to which I am invited.
Anyway, since I’m already participating in this challenge to put myself out there and audition, I figured I’d share that information with my website visitors as well! So, let’s get into the weeds with this one. If you like data, I’ve got it. I’ll be doing these posts once a week, to give you an idea of the effort involved vs the results I’m seeing.
Each audition takes about two minutes for me to complete. I get in my booth, load up the invitation, do a 30 second read, and fire it off to the potential client with my proposal. This will help give you an idea of the time and effort involved to get work on the site. Here’s my first few weeks of data to share, to get you up to speed:
Week 1: 12/13/20 - 12/19/20
Submissions: 65
Listens: 53
Shortlist: 11
Wins: 2
So, for week one, 81% of my auditions were listened to by the client, and 3% of clients booked my services. Lots of articles I’ve seen, along with anecdotal experiences heard from other voice actors, tell me that the average booking rate is around 1%. That means 100 auditions for every job won. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty happy about where I stand in comparison.
Week 2: 12/20/20 - 12/26/20
Submissions: 20
Listens: 16
Shortlist: 3
Wins: 1
This week was pretty slow, in terms of auditions that became available. This is likely because of the Christmas holiday. Offices are closed, people are on vacation, you know the drill. Even still, I was able to get an 80% listen rate, and a 5% booking rate. Not too shabby.
Week 3: 12/27/20 - 01/02/21
Submissions: 23
Listens: 12
Shortlist: 3
Wins: 1
Another lighter week on the audition front. Many businesses were closed or only partially staffed. With New Year’s Eve and Day on the brain, it’s to be expected. This week I had a listen rate of 52%, which makes sense given the situation. Still, my booking rate was 4.3%. I’ll take it!
Check back next week for an update on how I’m doing on Voices!
